It is hard to wander around aimlessly and by sheer luck end up at the destination you wanted.

Most of us therefore use GPS or a map when we are trying to get somewhere important.

The same methods should be used by those who want to retire early.

For me the scariest transition will come when I finally decide it is time to hang up the MRI machine.

The checklist ensures that I am not leaving anything of importance behind once I am leaving home for an extended time.

When you are working there is almost no time to do other things, which certainly can be a problem.

What is less intuitive is that it is also problematic when you have too much time and nothing to do, an issue some retirees face.

Timing is everything.

This is especially true for determining when to retire.

If you retire and then there is a global recession, that nest egg you worked your entire life for could get cracked (this is known as the Sequence Of Return Risk (SORR)).
